LEWIS AND CLARK BICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION & TOURISM

Two hundred years ago Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark left St. Louis Missouri to explore the newly purchased land west of the Missouri River. Appointed by President Thomas Jefferson the two soldiers were charged with finding a passage to the Pacific Ocean. Now two hundred years later, the nation is commemorating the three year journey of what was to be the start of the western movement. One can only imagine what the Lewis and Clark entourage felt as they left the plains of Western Montana and headed into the mountainous Clearwater Country.

Clearwater Economic Development Association administers Direct Congressional Appropriations on behalf of the Idaho Governor's Lewis Clark Trail Committee for projects related to the enhancement of the Trail communities and organizations. Although planning and implementation is complete, and the end is near for the Bicentennial in Idaho, much still needs to be accomplished in establishing tourism as a vital part of north central Idaho's future.

Relationships between the Clearwater Economic Development Association, Idaho Governor's Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee, North Central Idaho Travel Association, Nez Perce Tribe, and all other partners have helped develop the Bicentennial Tourism department. Other accomplished have been the All American Road Status for Highway 12, and a Way finding System.
